Create a Beautiful, Contemporary Top from a Malibu Barbie Swimsuit

If you’re a child of the 70’s, you’ll recognize this blue swimsuit as the go-to look for Malibu Barbie. The reproduction came out recently, so this cool little one piece is easy to find and cheap to buy.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Malibu Barbie swimsuit

Blue thread

Needle

Scissors

Fabric pencil

Doll

Here’s the before of this cute suit. Most of my dolls are Dynamite Girls, or modified Dynamite Girls. This is Pippa. She’s a Dynamite Girl body with a Barbie Basic Steffie mold from the Red Collection.

You’ll first put the suit on the doll to make sure you know where you want the gathers to end. Put the suit on the doll inside out and make a little dot where you want the gathers to end.  You can see my little dot here.

Take a ruler and dot out a straight line to follow (from the red dot to the top of the suit)  if you’re nervous about being able to stitch a straight line by hand.  Now you’re ready to stitch. Start on the inside of the garment and make tiny little gathering stitches, like so:

You’ll stitch all the way up to the top of the garment, and then back down again. When you’ve reached the starting point of the red dot, pull your thread tight and tie it off in a knot, making sure to tie your knot in the inside of the garment.  And that’s that!

Your chic new top is ready to wear. Pippa had a great time shopping in her’s!

It also makes a great simple top for jewelry and make-up shoots. I would love to see how your dolls wear it!
